Viagra helps women with sexual dysfunction

May 30, 2006

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Similar to what has been shown in men, Viagra (sildenafil) appears to be a useful treatment for women with sexual dysfunction related to the use of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), according to study findings presented Monday at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association in Atlanta.

“In 25 percent of patients with sexual dysfunction, it is caused by the medications they’re taking,” lead author Dr. H. George Nurnberg, from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, told Reuters Health. “Antidepressants are especially well known for causing sexual adverse effects.”

The big problem, Nurnberg said, is that these sexual side effects often cause patients to stop taking their antidepressants, which can have serious, even fatal, consequences.

In a study reported in 2003, Nurnberg’s team showed that Viagra improves sexual function in men with SSRI-related erectile dysfunction. “Twice as many women have depression as men and three times as many women are on antidepressants.” Hence, the researchers thought it would be worthwhile to look at Viagra’s effects in women too, Nurnberg said.

The new study involved 100 women with major depression in remission and SSRI-related sexual dysfunction who were randomized to receive Viagra or placebo as needed prior to sexual activity. This 8-week randomized phase was then followed by an 8-week open label phase. The main outcome measure was the Clinical Global Impression-Sexual Function (CGI-SF) score.

Gene transfer appears safe as impotence therapy

May 30, 2006

These findings pave the way for phase II studies to establish the effectiveness of this gene transfer approach, he concluded.

Viagra Yes, Contraceptives No :

May 5, 2006

Women’s rights groups and family planning advocates want the Michigan Legislature to pass bills that would require health insurers covering prescription drugs to include contraceptives in that coverage. They argue that in some cases, drug plans will cover the cost of Viagra, taken by men to treat sexual impotence, but not cover women’s birth control costs. As a result, women in Michigan of childbearing age spend two-thirds more than men on out-of-pocket health care costs.

Insurers, automakers and businesses — including many that already have decided on their own to cover contraceptives — oppose mandated benefits, arguing that contraceptive coverage should be negotiated. The Michigan Catholic Conference calls the bills a “direct assault on the rights of religious employers.

Advocates say employers and insurers can save money by covering contraception because it eliminates the higher costs associated with unplanned pregnancies, and that it reduces unplanned pregnancies, resulting in fewer abortions.

But opponents criticize the push to require contraceptive benefits.

Blocked in the Michigan Legislature since 1999, frustrated women’s rights groups and family planning advocates are preparing to take their case to the Michigan Civil Rights Commission. They want the eight-member panel to decide that employers who don’t cover all federally approved contraceptive drugs and devices are violating the state’s civil rights law.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has found that Title VII — which applies to companies with 15 or more workers — bars the exclusion of contraceptive coverage when other drugs and devices are covered. But 60 percent of Michigan businesses employ fewer than 15 people, according to the ACLU.

Twenty-four states require coverage of contraceptives approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration if other prescriptions are covered — though 17 of those states have exceptions for certain employers, usually religious organizations, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit reproductive rights think tank.
